Description
In the last decade of his life, John Henry Twachtman often painted the landscapes near his home on Round Hill Road in Greenwich, Connecticut. He loved to show the beauty of the frozen land, believing it encouraged thought and renewal. In “Icebound,” the thick layers of paint resemble snow piling up on the ground. The curves outlining the snow and ice by the water hint at movement in the peaceful setting. The dots of orange leaves against the chilly snow display the change from autumn into a Connecticut winter. The almost square shape and balanced design of the painting reflect Twachtman’s view that “nature is never more lovely than when it is snowing.”
