“The White Bridge” portrays Horseneck Brook as it flows through John Henry Twachtman’s property in Connecticut. Over six years, Twachtman painted at least six versions of this bridge, each with subtle variations in its shape. Whether he modified the bridge itself or simply reimagined its form in each painting remains unclear. Rendered with loose, feathery brushstrokes in shades of green and rich brown, and leaving portions of the canvas unprimed, this piece vividly captures the swift growth and lush blossoming of spring.
